Spencer Howard is a pitcher who currently plays for the Texas Rangers, having made the switch from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2021.
Despite a few issues surrounding recurring shoulder injuries, he still has enough potential to develop into the top prospect he was once considered to be in Philadelphia’s organisation.
Here’s a roundup with some of the best Spencer Howard rookie cards, as well as buying/selling advice for the next few years.
The Best Spencer Howard Cards
The majority of Howard cards focus on the time he spent with the Phillies.
3. 2021 Topps Inception Spencer Howard RC #APC-SH (eBay)
The 2021 Topps Inception set contains arguably the best looking Howard RC to make the list.
The serial-numbered Autograph Patch subset adds a customary splash of colour to the combination of an auto and player-worn memorabilia. You’ll find an image of the player on the right, and there’s a variety of rare parallels with a print run of 99 or less.
Parallels: Green #/99, Magenta #/75, Red #/25, Orange #/10, Blue Button #/6, Inception Logo 1/1
2. 2018 Bowman Chrome Prospects Spencer Howard RC #CPA-SH (eBay)
You can never go wrong with a player’s 1st Bowman signature, and the same is true for Howard. There’s a strong action shot of the pitcher which takes center stage, along with a strong on-card auto at the bottom.
As always, Refractor parallels are numerous, ranging from base copies numbered to 499, to an elusive one-of-one.
Parallels: Refractor #/499, Purple #/250, Blue #/150, Atomic #/100, Green #/99, Green Shimmer #/99, Gold #/50, Gold Shimmer #/50, Orange #/25, Orange Shimmer #/25, Canary Yellow Shimmer #/10, Red #/5, Red Shimmer #/5, SuperFractor 1/1, Printing Plates 1/1
1. 2021 Topps Chrome Baseball Alec Bohm / Spencer Howard RC #DRA-AH (eBay)
2021 Topps Chrome Baseball is up next, specifically the Dual Rookies Autographs subset. In a card with a base version limited to 25 copies, Howard shares the limelight with Alex Bohm, as they were seen as strong Phillies prospects at the time.
Bohm was recently demoted to the minors, following a string of defensive errors. He still had a strong rookie season, and has time to come good on his early potential.
Parallels: Red #/5, SuperFractor 1/1
Spencer Howard Cards: Buyers Guide
We’ve provided a brief buyer’s guide below if you’re wondering about the current state of the Spencer Howard card market.
Almost any of his RCs are in the budget range, so it’s a matter of personal preference. Even the rarest one-of-ones won’t break the bank at this point in time. As such, we’d look at his 2018 Bowman card, as the brand is the most prestigious overall.
We also think the 2018 Bowman release is his best card overall from an investment perspective, even if it’s unlikely to shoot up in price significantly. If you’re looking for the best baseball investments, we’d look elsewhere.
Spencer Howard Cards: Buying/Selling Advice
In the grand scheme of things, Howard cards probably aren’t going to be the best baseball investment piece if you don’t think he has what it takes to live up to his early potential. Injuries may have taken a toll on his pitching, although the Rangers clearly think he still has something left to give.
If they’re right, his cards are currently as low as they’re ever likely to be.
