Interested in the best Wolverine cards to collect? For a long time, Wolverine was arguably the most popular Marvel hero thanks to a string of hit blockbuster films, and is featured on a number of valuable cards released over the years.

The latest in our collection of superhero card roundups features Wolverine. An iconic character that also happens to be the best known of the X-Men, we’ve narrowed the list down to five top options.

The Best Wolverine Cards

Expect to pay a lot of money if you’re hoping to add one of the Wolverine cards seen below to your collection.

5. 2021 Marvel X-Men Metal Universe Wolverine Platinum Portraits #24 (eBay)

2021 Marvel X-Men Metal Universe Wolverine Platinum Portraits #24

A newer release, 2021 Upper Deck Marvel X-Men Metal Universe borrows heavily from the past.

For example, the 1997-98 Fleer Metal Universe Platinum Portraits Basketball subset is one of the most popular from the decade, featuring some of the biggest NBA stars from the era.

Platinum Portrait inserts use a series of holes to form an image of the subject on a silver card, and have been given the Marvel treatment in 2021. Falling at a rate of one in 600 hobby packs, they’re also hyper-rare.

4. 2017 Fleer Ultra Spider-Man Wolverine Jambalaya #4 (eBay)

2017 Fleer Ultra Spider-Man is insert heavy, including the die-cut Jambalaya subset of 30 cards. Coming in at a rate of one in every 72 packs, it’s not the rarest option by any means, but fewer boxes were being produced six years ago.

Once again, Jambalaya is an insert set that is better known for being included in Upper Deck sets from the 1990s.

3. 2021 Marvel X-Men Metal Universe Wolverine #69 (eBay)

Next up, let’s head back to 2021 Upper Deck Marvel X-Men Metal Universe.

Limited to 90 Red copies along with a further 10 Green parallels, we’re looking at the Precious Metal Gems subset, featuring brightly colored cards in the Metal portion of the set.

PMGs are immensely popular, but 2021 options should be far cheaper than anything released beforehand. It’s also arguably the best image of Wolverine to make the list.

  • Parallels: Green #/10

2. 2013 Marvel Fleer Retro Wolverine Precious Metal Gems #16 (eBay

The 2013 Marvel Fleer Retro set is where you’ll find the first ever release of superhero-themed Precious Metal Gems cards. PMGs are always popular, with a miniscule print run, and vivid designs.

The chrome finish is especially prone to chipping, making the cards tough to locate if you’re looking for pristine copies. Expect to pay a premium if you’re hoping to add one to your personal collection, especially when looking at the Blue or Green versions.

1. 2021 Marvel X-Men Metal Universe Wolverine Planet Metal #19 (eBay)

Heading back to 2021 Upper Deck Marvel X-Men Metal Universe, Planet Metal is another subset that has proven to be extremely popular with collectors since it was released in June 2021. It features metal stock, and a strong image of Wolverine set against a full-bleed background. (Check out the Gold parallel above, which is limited to only 15 copies.)

Planet Metal is another insert set that was popularized in the 1990s. It’ll be interesting to see what the long-term values are like for the best Wolverine cards from the collection.

What are the most expensive Wolverine cards?

Any of the options listed above get to be mightily expensive if you’re looking at graded versions of the rarest parallels. It makes sense given Wolverine is one of the more memorable Marvel characters, with a massive following.

As for the most expensive Wolverine card overall, the PMG cards sell for a lot of money, given their scarcity and popularity.

The Best Wolverine Cards: Final Thoughts

Wolverine is a major hero in the Marvel universe. As such, his rarest cards are always likely to be an attraction, and can easily sell for four figures or more. It’s hard to do better unless you’re looking at core Avengers like Iron Man or Captain America

Hugh Jackman has also agreed to reprise the role, and is expected to appear in Deadpool 3 sometime in 2024.
