Billy Gilmour was one of the more talented young players to emerge from the Premier League rookie class of 2020/21. Billy Gilmour made his name at Chelsea, although he featured just 22 times for the west London club since joining from Rangers in 2017, aged 16. Having moved to Brighton, he’s sure to get more opportunities to shine in the Premier League.

The 2020-21 Topps Museum Collection contains 12 Gilmour rookie cards, and that’s without accounting for parallels. The Framed Autographs subset is especially eye-catching, featuring a close-up shot of the midfielder, while base copies are limited to 50. (It’s easy to identify thanks to the framed border.) Always one of the more popular soccer collections, 2021-22 Panini Prizm Premier League focuses on the top flight in England, with a massive 300-card base set. Prizm tends to be valued more highly than other sets. This is mostly due to the large number of collectors and the distinctive design.

What happened to Billy Gilmour?

The player joined Brighton in a four-year deal in September 2022. He butted heads with former Blues manager Thomas Tuchel at times. Even though he gained experience during his loan spell with Norwich, they ended up being relegated. He’s dropped off the radar to some extent, and it means that his rookie cards are far cheaper than they used to be. 

Here’s what Tuchel had to say when Gilmour left the club:

“We had high hopes and he played for us in the first half a year when I was at Chelsea. He played some important matches for us and looked for a new challenge that did not go so well for him with Norwich.

“We expected more, he expected more so it was like, without pointing a finger, but it is difficult also for him and for us to not succeed. To not play at Norwich, to be relegated and then suddenly be a central midfielder for Chelsea and competing for top four and for every title.

“There’s a huge step in between so we were looking, the ideal solution would have been maybe that he goes again on loan as the concurrence is huge for us in central midfield and we felt like he is not the age where he can live again with five or six or seven matches during a whole season to fulfill his own potential so ideally, it would have been another loan.

“Billy did not want to go on loan, it was a no-go for him so in the end, we agreed to a sale.”

I always keep an eye on ex-Chelsea players. I think that Gilmour was unlucky not to get more opportunities with the Blues. He’s certainly talented enough to get picked up by a side who will be fighting for trophies consistently, and Brighton have been playing well since he signed with the team.
