We had to wait a while for our Topps 22/23 Deco boxes to show up, and we plan to have a review up in the next week or so.
For now, we’d prefer to draw attention to an error card contained within the set. Rather than Brazilian legend Ronaldo, who is a massive hit, the sticker auto is actually signed by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. Against all odds, we found a copy in our second box, limited to 49 copies.
It’s not often that an error card features two massive legends from the game, especially two players who were icons for the same club. Here’s everything you need to know about the Topps 22/23 Deco R9 CR7 Ronaldo error card.
The card: Topps 22/23 Deco R9 CR7 Ronaldo autograph
The Ronaldo (R9) signature is a great hit, as it’s numbered, and shows the legend playing for Real Madrid, instead of in his famous Brazil shirt. (Most Leaf signatures lack club licences, making them cheaper in comparison.) There are parallels numbered to 1/5/10/25/49 & 99.
In other words, it’s a CR7 auto sticker from a set in which he has no signature. It’s a clear mistake, and the stickers are likely to have been meant for another Topps product. Maybe we’ll see a bunch of R9 signatures on Cristiano Ronaldo cards in the future.
Topps 22/23 Deco R9 CR7 Ronaldo Error Card (eBay)
As of now, there’s a sole copy on the market when we checked out eBay, limited to 10. In terms of the error itself, it’s obvious as soon as you look at the card. In true CR7 fashion, there’s even a little 7 inside the loop of the C. My assumption is that every R9 auto from the set has a CR7 sticker which was placed by mistake. (After all, mine was a /49 parallel.)
In theory, it’s rarer than similar autos from either player. It’ll be interesting to see what values look like if and when more copies make it onto the market. The card seen above also has a lot of watchers, so there’s definite interest.
CR7 fell a few places in our list of the best soccer investment cards for 2023, but there’s no denying that both Ronaldo’s are legendary forwards within the sport.
O Fenômeno is widely seen as one of the greatest of all-time, while CR7 became professional football’s all-time top goalscorer with 807 goals after scoring a hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur in March 2022.
I’m going to hold onto my copy, and see whether it can be sent off for grading despite the error. Would you prefer to have packed a normal auto, or the error that combines both Ronaldo’s?
